U.S. Blacklists Former Sri Lankan Navy Commander for “Gross Human Rights Violations”

In a recent development, the United States Department of State blacklisted Wasantha Karanngoda, Governor of North Western Province of Sri Lanka. The sanctions apply to the Governor and his wife, Srimathi Ashoka Karanngoda. Under it, the two are ineligible for entry into the United States.

Wasantha was a commander for the Sri Lankan navy between 2005-2009. The sanctions are in light of the commander’s actions during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War. His actions have been documented & verified by a number of NGO and official independent investigations.

According to the US department of State, “Wasantha Karannagoda committed a gross human rights violation, documented by NGOs and independent investigations, is serious and credible.” In recent years, the US has sanctioned several Sri Lankan military personnel that participated in the atrocities committed during the Civil War.
