In a new development, the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry & Security added 6 businesses of Chinese origin to their sanctions lists.
All 6 companies have been penalized for the same reason – involvement with the PLA, the principal military force operating in China. According to external reports, all 6 companies allegedly contribute to the PLA’s aerospace programs, especially for surveillance and reconnaissance.
This ban comes just a few days after surveillance balloons of Chinese origin were spotted flying over US airspace. While China maintains that the balloon was simply recording weather events, the US alleges these balloons were used for spying, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
Under the BIS, business with the 6 companies will now be subject to a license requirement for all items under the EAR – Export Administration Regulations. In addition, the BIS will review all license applications with a high likelihood of denial for each application.
